FTI Consulting and IAPP Release In-Depth Study About the State of Global AI Governance

Press release

Washington, D.C., June 4, 2024 — Professionals around the world recognize that effective artificial intelligence governance is becoming significantly more complicated, an issue discussed in detail in the Report on AI Governance in Practice, from the IAPP and the Technology segment within FTI Consulting, Inc. (NYSE: FCN).

The report, which outlines the existing global spectrum of voluntary and regulatory AI frameworks, provides actionable, real-world insights surrounding risk management for advanced technologies, along with commentary from governance experts within large, multinational corporations.

“AI systems have become powerful engines for disruption across industries and geographies, leaving businesses and governments grappling with how to set boundaries while staying competitive in the technology transformation race,” said Sophie Ross, Global Chief Executive Officer of FTI Technology. “As the reach of this technology grows, the weight of responsibility to manage the risks grows in parallel. Our teams are partnering closely with industry bodies such as the IAPP to understand the needs and solutions for AI governance broadly and at the most granular levels, so we can help our clients design their governance frameworks according to their unique role, goals, footprint, risk profile and AI maturity.”

The IAPP-FTI Report on AI Governance in Practice covers:

  • The intersection of AI and governance, including emerging standards frameworks and regulations.
  • Data challenges to be addressed in AI governance, including the use of third-party data, as well as issues of data quality, data management and appropriate use.
  • Data privacy and data protection implications in AI systems, particularly with respect to legal and regulatory obligations under privacy laws.
  • Transparency, “explainability” and interpretability challenges in AI systems, and requirements for addressing these under laws such as the EU AI Act.
  • Concerns relating to bias, fairness and discrimination that may proliferate within AI systems and the data used to train models.
  • Definitions and considerations relating to various aspects of AI safety.
  • Other legal considerations that may arise during the use of AI, including copyright risks and third-party assurance.

IAPP Director for Research and Insights Joe Jones added, “The legislative and regulatory landscape for AI governance is rapidly changing to meet the needs of this significant technological advancement. The Report on AI Governance in Practice helps to unpack some of the most eminent and evolving issues for the global governance of artificial intelligence and the measures, techniques and tools to put AI governance into practice.”

The report will be discussed during a panel at the IAPP’s AI Governance Global conference in Brussels from June 4-5, 2024. FTI Technology Senior Director Luisa Resmerita will join the panel on June 4 to share best practices for how privacy and governance professionals can navigate this challenging new field as regulations and technology evolve.
